Balancer-chain tensioner ("Doohickey") weak/failure
SeriousOccasionalThe counterbalancer chain is tensioned by an eccentric idler lever ("doohickey") held by a spring and clamp bolt. The Gen 3 uses the same tensioner parts as 2008-onward — the spring can lose tension so the system stops adjusting, causing excessive vibration and wear; in worst cases the lever or spring breaks, the balancer chain slips, and debris can jam the cam chain and bend valves.

Seat removal: two bolts at the rear of the seat (10mm or Allen depending on replacement hardware); lift and slide the seat rearward — this is the gateway to the fuses, battery and fuel pump.
ReferenceAccessory-power connector and relay
Accessory power sockets/relay: pre-wired accessory harness lead behind the headlight, right side; a relay in that socket powers the accessory ports off a 15A fuse (Adventure ships with the relay; base/S may need the relay + fuse fitted).

Timing/TDC inspection caps: two threaded caps on the left engine cover — the larger for the rotor bolt (rotate CCW), the smaller to view the "I / F / T" marks; used for valve checks and doohickey timing.

Rear shock adjusters (S-specific tuning): spring-preload collar on the left of the shock (settings 1-5); rebound adjuster (flat-blade) at the bottom-right of the shock.
