Cam chain tensioner re-priming (temporary fix for "death rattle")

  1. 01Remove the hydraulic cam chain tensioner from the engine (accessible without removing the cylinder head on F-twin engines).
  2. 02Fully prime the tensioner with fresh engine oil, working the plunger until no air bubbles emerge and the piston feels hard/firm.
  3. 03Reinstall the primed tensioner onto the engine.
  4. 04Start the engine and confirm the rattle has stopped immediately after replacement.
  5. 05Be aware this may be a temporary fix only — some tensioners leak down again within hours to days, requiring a permanent tensioner replacement or repeat servicing.

What breaks first and where.

01

Cam chain tensioner hydraulic leak-down ("death rattle")

ModerateCommon

The hydraulic cam chain tensioner on BMW's F-series parallel-twin engine (shared with F650GS/F700GS/F800GS) can lose internal oil while the bike sits, allowing air into the tensioner. This causes a loud rattling noise from the timing chain, especially on cold/initial start after the bike has been parked. Widely discussed and confirmed by multiple owners across the F-twin platform.

Symptoms

  • Loud rattling noise from engine on startup
  • Rattle worsens the longer the bike sits parked
  • Tensioner found dry/empty of oil when removed

Field repairableYes — Tensioner can be removed, re-primed with oil, or replaced with a new unit; some owners report even new tensioners eventually leak down again, requiring repeat servicing or an upgraded tensioner.

02

Side-stand switch water ingress / damage (recall 14V-065)

SeriousRare

Due to a production sealing fault, water could enter the side-stand switch on certain F700GS (and related F-series/R-series) motorcycles, potentially causing the switch to malfunction. This could prevent the motorcycle from starting or could shut off the engine unexpectedly while riding, increasing crash risk. NHTSA campaign 14V065000, affecting model year 2013 units including F700GS built through Sept 2013 (production fix implemented Sept 20, 2013).

Symptoms

  • Motorcycle fails to start
  • Engine shuts off unexpectedly while riding

Field repairableNo — Requires dealer replacement of the side-stand switch under recall; not a rider field repair.

03

Side-stand ignition cut-off switch loosening (recall 13V-279 / Transport Canada 2013209)

SeriousRare

On certain 2011-2013 F700GS/F800GS motorcycles, the side-stand ignition cut-off switch (secured by a circlip) could loosen and become damaged over time, causing it to fail to shut off the engine when the side stand is extended in gear. This is a separate, earlier recall from the 2014 water-ingress recall. Affects earlier production F700GS units (2011-2013), not confirmed to affect the 2014 model year specifically.

Symptoms

  • Engine continues running with side stand deployed
  • Risk of side stand contacting ground mid-turn

Field repairableNo — Dealer fix: bolts installed to securely fasten the side-stand switch, replacing the original circlip retention.

04

Sudden, undiagnosed total engine failure at high mileage

CatastrophicRare

At least one documented case on the BMW MOA forum of a 2016 F700GS with ~30,000 miles experiencing sudden and complete engine shutdown while riding at operating temperature, with no prior warning signs. Cause undiagnosed at time of report; owner referred to dealer for diagnosis. Included here as a documented but not confirmed common/systemic issue — insufficient evidence to call this endemic.

Symptoms

  • Complete sudden engine shutdown while riding
  • Engine cranks but will not restart or run

Typical failure point48,000 km

Field repairableNo — No field diagnosis or fix reported; case referred to BMW dealer.
