Contact breaker (points) cleaning and gap adjustment

  1. 01Remove the points cover on the right side of the engine.
  2. 02Rotate the engine until the point set to be serviced is fully open (use the kickstart or rear wheel in neutral).
  3. 03Inspect contact faces for pitting or discoloration; if lightly pitted, dress with a fine points file, then wipe clean with a lint-free cloth and contact cleaner.
  4. 04Insert a 0.3-0.4mm (approx. 0.012-0.016in) feeler gauge between the points at full separation.
  5. 05Loosen the point-plate locking screw slightly and adjust plate position until the feeler gauge is a light drag fit; retighten the locking screw.
  6. 06Repeat for the second point set, then verify ignition timing with a timing light against the 'F' mark (10° BTDC static reference).

Valve clearance adjustment (cold engine)

  1. 01Allow the engine to cool completely (valve clearances are specified cold).
  2. 02Remove the valve inspection caps and rotate the engine to position the piston of the cylinder being checked at top dead center on the compression stroke (both valves closed/rockers loose).
  3. 03Insert a feeler gauge between the rocker arm and valve stem tip: intake clearance 0.05mm, exhaust clearance 0.08mm.
  4. 04If clearance is out of spec, loosen the rocker adjuster locknut, turn the adjuster screw to achieve correct clearance, and re-torque the locknut while holding the adjuster screw stationary.
  5. 05Recheck clearance after tightening, then repeat for remaining cylinders in firing-order sequence.

Drive chain adjustment and lubrication

  1. 01Place the motorcycle on its center stand with the rear wheel off the ground.
  2. 02Check chain slack at the midpoint of the lower chain run; factory spec is approximately 20mm (3/4in) of vertical movement.
  3. 03If adjustment is needed, loosen the rear axle nut and both chain adjuster wingnuts/lock nuts.
  4. 04Turn each adjuster bolt evenly on both sides, using the reference marks on the swingarm to keep the wheel aligned, until correct slack is achieved.
  5. 05Re-tighten the axle nut to factory torque, then re-tighten the adjuster lock nuts.
  6. 06Lubricate the chain with SAE 80/90 gear oil (per factory manual) rather than a modern aerosol chain lube, applied to the inside of the chain while warm; this is a non-O-ring chain, so heavier gear oil penetrates the rollers effectively.

Carburetor synchronization and idle mixture (4-carb bank)

  1. 01Warm the engine to normal operating temperature.
  2. 02Connect a 4-cylinder vacuum gauge set to each carburetor's vacuum takeoff port.
  3. 03Adjust the idle speed screw to the factory idle target of 950-1050 rpm.
  4. 04Adjust each carburetor's synchronizing screw so all four cylinders show equal vacuum readings, using the #1 (or highest-reading) carb as the baseline.
  5. 05Adjust pilot screws to 1.5 turns out from lightly seated as a factory baseline, then fine-tune for smoothest idle.
  6. 06Verify throttle cable freeplay and choke/fast-idle linkage operate smoothly after synchronization.

Cam chain tensioner cracking (rubber-faced tensioner arm)

The SOHC CB750's cam chain tensioner uses a rubber-covered, bowed metal tensioner arm that is subject to cracking from years of vibration and heat cycling, developing what owners describe as a 'spider web of cracks.' This is widely documented across the SOHC CB750/900/1100F engine family that shares this tensioner design, and is considered one of the most common age-related failure points on these engines.

Symptoms

  • Rattling/slapping noise from the cam chain area, especially at idle or on deceleration
  • Visible cracking of the rubber facing on the tensioner arm upon inspection
  • Eventual tensioner arm failure allowing excessive cam chain slack

Automatic timing advance mechanism wear (points cam/advancer)
