Cam chain tensioner ticking noise fix (left cylinder)

  1. 01Place the bike on its centre stand to minimize oil spill
  2. 02Remove crash bars/engine guard if fitted (reinstall later with Loctite at correct torque)
  3. 03Remove the left cylinder's hydraulic cam chain tensioner using a 17mm socket (or 19mm for updated part)
  4. 04Lubricate the piston of the new/updated tensioner (BMW part 11317108586) lightly with engine oil (SAE 5W-40, API SL/JASO MA2)
  5. 05Install the new tensioner and tighten to 32 Nm — no Loctite required
  6. 06Reinstall crash bars/engine guard with Loctite at correct torque

What breaks first and where.

01

Gearbox input shaft overload/breakage (NHTSA Recall 23V-011)

CatastrophicRare

Same defect as standard R1250GS: under abrupt speed differences between engine and final drive, the gearbox input shaft can be overloaded, potentially damaging or breaking it and locking the rear wheel. Approximately 9,416 GS Adventure units affected in the US alone.

Symptoms

  • Damaged or broken gearbox input shaft
  • Locked/blocked rear wheel
  • Potential loss of control

Field repairableNo

02

Left-cylinder cam chain tensioner ticking noise

MinorCommon

Same ShiftCam-engine hydraulic tensioner issue as standard R1250GS — ticking noise from left cylinder at operating temperature due to tensioner oil leakage.

Symptoms

  • Ticking or rattling noise from left cylinder on warm start/idle

Field repairableYes — Swap to updated cam chain tensioner (BMW part 11317108586); same procedure as standard R1250GS
