Throttle position sensor (TPS) adaptation reset for stalling/idle issues

  1. 01Turn the ignition on but do not start the engine.
  2. 02Wait for the dashboard warning lights to go out.
  3. 03Rotate the throttle grip from fully closed (0) to fully open and back to fully closed (0) three times.
  4. 04Turn the ignition off.
  5. 05Restart the engine and check whether the stalling/idle behavior has improved.

What breaks first and where.

01

Engine stall at idle with clutch engaged (NHTSA recall 16V-689)

SeriousOccasional

BMW-issued safety recall for G650GS and G650GS Sertao motorcycles: the engine control unit software regulating idle speed could allow the engine to stall when the clutch lever is engaged and the engine is at idle. Stalling typically occurred shortly before the motorcycle came to a stop. Root cause traced to loss of correct idle-stepper-motor position values after an ECU shutdown event. This recall superseded an earlier related campaign (15V-537).

Symptoms

  • Engine stalls when clutch lever is pulled in at idle
  • Stall typically occurs shortly before coming to a stop

Field repairableNo — Remedy is a dealer-installed revised engine control unit (ECU) software update; not a rider-serviceable field repair.

02

Decompression lever / exhaust valve clearance issue (hot no-start)

ModerateOccasional

Documented case of a G650GS Sertao where the motorcycle would crank but not start when the engine was warm, resolved only after cooling for 10-15 minutes. Dealer diagnosis found exhaust valve clearance too loose and performed a BMW-issued bulletin replacing/adjusting the decompression lever on the exhaust camshaft, per BMW Motorrad USA service bulletin dated August 2012.

Symptoms

  • Engine cranks but won't start when warm
  • Starts fine when cold
  • Resolves after cooling for 10-15 minutes

Field repairableNo — Requires dealer-performed bulletin work: reshimming exhaust valve clearance and/or replacing the decompression lever on the exhaust camshaft.

03

Intermittent random stall with electrical fault codes

ModerateOccasional

Multiple ADVrider threads document G650GS units randomly stalling at speed (engine cuts out like the kill switch was hit), sometimes recoverable only after disconnecting the battery briefly. GS-911 diagnostic scans in one case returned an 'electrical system undervoltage' code and a 'speed sensor (rpm) signal implausible' code, both intermittent/no-longer-present at time of scan, making root-cause diagnosis difficult.

Symptoms

  • Engine suddenly quits while riding at speed
  • Engine restarts only after disconnecting/reconnecting battery in some cases
  • Intermittent electrical fault codes on diagnostic scan

Field repairableYes — Some owners report resetting throttle position sensor adaptation values (ignition on, engine off, cycle throttle 0-100-0 three times, then ignition off) resolves stalling for them; root electrical cause not conclusively identified across all reported cases.

04

Fuel pump housing / cap leak

ModerateRare

Documented case of fuel leaking from under the fuel pump housing cap (the part that threads onto the fuel tank holding the in-tank fuel pump) while the engine is running.

Symptoms

  • Fuel visibly leaking from underside of fuel pump cap while engine running

Field repairableYes — Reported fix involves resealing or replacing the fuel pump housing cap/gasket; specific steps not fully detailed in the source thread.
