What breaks first and where.

01

Turn signal / combination tail-light housings break off-road

ModerateOccasional

The rear combination turn signal/tail-light housings on the new F800GS/F900GS platform are reported by an owner to snap or break off relatively easily when the bike is dropped or ridden hard off-road. The bike has no separate stand-alone brake light, so damage to this housing can also compromise brake-light visibility to following traffic. Owner reported a replacement cost around $300.

Symptoms

  • Cracked or detached tail-light/turn-signal housing after a drop or off-road impact
  • Reduced brake-light visibility if housing is damaged

Field repairableYes — Owner reports replacing the housing/unit as a bolt-on part; no special tools required beyond standard fasteners.

02

Metal hand guards crack on drops (Rally-spec equipment)

MinorOccasional

The metal hand guards fitted to Rally-oriented trims of the new-platform bike are reported by an owner to crack when the motorcycle is dropped, rather than flexing/absorbing the impact as some plastic guards do.

Symptoms

  • Visible cracking of metal hand guard after a low-speed drop or tip-over

Field repairableYes — Bolt-on replacement part; no special procedure documented.

03

ABS cannot be fully deactivated

ModerateWidespread

Unlike older BMW GS platforms where ABS could be switched off entirely (e.g. for technical off-road riding), the new-generation F800GS/F900GS platform's ABS Pro system retains front-wheel ABS intervention even in the most off-road-oriented ride mode (Enduro Pro), and this cannot be fully defeated by the rider through the menu system.

Symptoms

  • Front ABS continues to intervene during hard off-road braking even in Enduro Pro mode
  • Rider cannot fully disable ABS via the instrument cluster menu

Field repairableNo

04

Traction control (DTC) resets to ON at every restart

MinorWidespread

Dynamic Traction Control on the new platform can be disengaged by the rider via the menu system for off-road riding, but it automatically re-enables itself every time the ignition is cycled, requiring the rider to manually disable it again after every restart.

Symptoms

  • DTC indicator shows active/enabled after every key-on/restart, even if previously disabled

Field repairableNo

05

eCall backend software error deactivated emergency call function (recall)

SeriousRare

A backend software error affecting the Intelligent Emergency Call (eCall) system was found to potentially deactivate the eCall function on certain BMW motorcycles including F900GS-platform models, without a corresponding fault indication to the rider. NHTSA campaign 25V480.

Symptoms

  • eCall emergency call function silently deactivated, no dashboard warning shown

Field repairableNo — Remedy delivered via BMW backend software correction / dealer software update, not a rider field fix.

06

Left combination switch manufacturing defect (pre-delivery recall, Canada)

ModerateRare

Transport Canada recall for a manufacturing defect in the left combination switch (handlebar switchgear) found on certain new-platform GS models, caught before customer delivery.

Symptoms

  • Left combination switch malfunction risk due to manufacturing defect

Field repairableNo — Dealer replacement of affected switch assembly under recall.
