Preventing battery drain during storage

  1. 01If the motorcycle will sit unused for more than 15 days, locate the 30A main fuse (behind the left-hand fairing, under the rider saddle).
  2. 02Remove the 30A fuse to disconnect the instrument panel/multi-function computer's continuous current draw.
  3. 03Store the fuse in a safe, memorable place (e.g. taped to the top of the battery) so it is not lost.
  4. 04Before riding again, reinsert the 30A fuse; if the battery does not hold at least 13V after a full charge, it may need replacement.

Diagnosing excess instrument panel current draw

  1. 01With the key switch OFF, remove the 7.5A instrument panel supply fuse.
  2. 02Connect a current meter (400-500mA scale, with the meter's leads reconfigured for mA measurement per the meter's instructions) in series across the fuse terminals using the red and blue wires at that circuit.
  3. 03Read the current draw after a few seconds of settling.
  4. 04A reading of 0.2-5mA is normal; only replace the battery if it will not hold above 13V after correct charging (2A, 14.4-14.8V, no pulse/de-sulfation chargers).
  5. 05A reading above 5mA indicates a faulty instrument panel, which should be replaced.
  6. 06Return the multimeter leads to their normal DC voltage configuration immediately after the test to avoid blowing the meter's internal fuse.

Gear shift lever coupling — non-compliant parts in limited production lot

A limited production lot of Aprilia 660-platform models (RS660, Tuono 660, and Tuareg 660) may have non-compliant parts installed at the gear shift lever-to-gear-preselector-shaft coupling. This is documented as a dealer inspection/check bulletin, not a formal safety recall.

Symptoms

  • Gear shift lever feels loose on its shaft
  • Imprecise or inconsistent gear shifting
  • Lever slipping/movement on the shaft under normal use

Field repairableNo — Dealer must torque-check the fastening screw (15 Nm), verify coupling security by attempting to pull the lever off the shaft 2-3 times, then apply Loctite 243 and retorque to 17 Nm; if the lever is loose, it must be replaced with Tuareg-specific part 2B011146 and the check repeated.

Premature battery discharge during extended non-use

The Tuareg 660's instrument panel can draw excessive current while the vehicle is switched off, leading to premature battery discharge if the bike sits unused for 15+ days. Aprilia published a diagnostic procedure and instructs owners to disconnect the 30A fuse if the vehicle will be inactive for more than 15 days.

Symptoms

  • Battery too weak to start the bike after 2+ weeks of inactivity
  • Battery will not hold charge above 13V even after charging

Field repairableYes — If the vehicle will sit for more than 15 days, remove the 30A fuse to prevent the instrument panel/multi-function computer from draining the battery. If the battery is already weak, recharge at 2A/14.4-14.8V (no pulse or de-sulfation chargers) and replace only if it will not hold above 13V after proper charging.

Kayaba front fork internal assembly defect (missing shim/spacer in compression stack)

Multiple owners on ADVrider and Reddit forums report finding a missing 1mm spacer and/or crushed shims in the Kayaba fork compression damping stack when disassembling forks for service, spanning reported model years 2022-2024. This is a community-documented manufacturing/assembly quality issue, not confirmed via any NHTSA recall or official Aprilia dealer bulletin.

Symptoms

  • Harsh or inconsistent front fork damping
  • Fork feels overly stiff or poorly controlled over bumps
  • Fork performance not matching expected fully-adjustable Kayaba specification

Field repairableYes — Disassemble the fork, inspect the compression damping stack for a missing 1mm spacer on the piston and for crushed shims, and rebuild with the correct spacer/shims. This requires fork-service tools and experience; treat as an advanced home-mechanic or suspension-shop task rather than a roadside fix.

Connecting rod recall — NOT applicable to Tuareg 660

MinorRare

NHTSA recall 21V-502 covers a batch of improperly heat-treated crankshaft connecting rods, but this recall is explicitly limited to 2021 model-year RS660 and Tuono 660 motorcycles. It does NOT apply to the Tuareg 660, despite sharing the same 660 engine platform. Included here only to document that this well-known 660-platform recall is inapplicable to this vehicle, to prevent it being mistakenly attached to Tuareg records.
