Operational warnings

red · Operational constraint

Big Bend National Park currently requires a true high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle for River Road and warns that wash crossings can become impassable after rain; ATVs and off-highway vehicles are prohibited.

A passenger car, crossover or non-compliant vehicle is not a valid River Road plan, and wet conditions can remove access even for a suitable 4WD.

Planning response: Use a compliant high-clearance 4WD, confirm the full primitive-road status immediately before entry and abandon the route after significant rain or any park closure.

Seasonal windows are planning triggers, not a substitute for current road, weather or land-access reports. Recheck the official sources below before departure.
